Mon 23rd - Sat 27th: PILGRIMAGE WALK TO CANTERBURY
Nick Daunt, Ray Swift and six other church members are walking from London to Canterbury in a week to raise funds for various causes. The walk will start in London on the Monday and finish on the Saturday, all being well, with everyone arriving at Canterbury Cathedral for Evensong!
Here's a note from Nick all about the walk.....

From Southwark (left) to Canterbury (right) there will be some blisters collected on the way!

"As part of our 700th Anniversary celebrations a party of seasoned walkers will be setting out from London on 23rd July to walk the 78 miles to Canterbury Cathedral.

Canterbury was, of course, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations during the Middle Ages. Pilgrims, such as those in Chaucer's fictional Canterbury Tales, were drawn to the shrine of St Thomas Becket, who had been murdered by Henry II's knights while celebrating Mass in the Cathedral on 29th December 1170. With our dedication to St Thomas the Martyr and in view of the fact that a relic of St Thomas was reputedly owned by Up Holland Priory, we thought it would be a good way of celebrating our Anniversary year. The shrine of St Thomas was destroyed at the time of the Reformation, but it is still possible to see the spot in the Cathedral where the saint was martyred.

We will be taking six days to cover the journey - an average of 13 miles (a half marathon!) per day. We will be starting at Southwark Cathedral, which is close to the Tabard Inn, where Chaucer's pilgrims assembled before setting out. They would have travelled along the old Roman road, Watling Street, but since this is now the busy A2, we have chose a more scenic and pleasant route. After escaping from the south eastern suburbs of London, we eventually pick up the Darent Valley Path, which will take us to the Pilgrims' Way near Otford. This long distance trackway, which dates from prehistoric times, links the two cathedral cities of Winchester and Canterbury. We will be following it most of the way from Otford. On the way we hope to look at places of interest, especially some of the many fine churches along the route, and the Roman villa at Lullingstone, which is probably the earliest Christian site in England.

Various parishes along the way have offered to put us up for the night, so we will be taking fraternal greetings from everyone in Up Holland. We hope to arrive at Canterbury on 28th July in time for Evensong at the Cathedral. One of the Canons has agreed to meet us and show us round.

The people taking part in the walk are all seeking sponsorship. They have each decided on different charities they wish to support. We would welcome you support in this, and, of course, we would be very glad of your prayers - not least for our blisters!"

SEPTEMBER

23rd: SERVERS' GUILD REUNION DAY
The continuing celebrations of the 700th Anniversary of the Priory Church of St. Thomas the Martyr, Up Holland will include a Servers Reunion to be held on Sunday 23 September at 10 a.m. Canon Michael Wolfe, much loved former Rector of Up Holland, will be present. There have been several hundred Altar Servers at the Church over the years and records are incomplete. The role of altar server was introduced in 1950 although some younger members of the Choir carried out serving duties in the forties. If you are a former server and would like to meet up again with old friends then please contact the address below.

Head Server Brian Sixsmith hopes that present and former servers will write a short note to the Guild of Servers which should make interesting reading. He said, "It would be good if people shared their thoughts, feelings and reminiscences about their experiences as servers and what it meant to them. I hope that some will give an assessment of their time spent as servers. Perhaps others will have amusing incidents to relate. Our servers have always had initiative, I am sure there will be many interesting contributions. Some servers may wish to simply send their good wishes to the Guild. It is encouraging that so many children and grandchildren of former servers carry on the tradition. Long may it continue."

All the letters will be put into a commemorative booklet together with a list of all those who have been servers at the Church, some of whom have sadly died. A copy will be placed in the time capsule which is to be prepared to mark the 700th Anniversary year of the Priory Church of St. Thomas the Martyr, Up Holland.

If you are a former altar server and would like to be kept in formed please send your name and contact details to Brian Sixsmith c/o The Rectory, 1a College Road, Up Holland, Skelmersdale. or click here to send details by e-mail.
